Frank Lloyd Wright Estate “Tirranna” in New Canaan, Connecticut Sells for $6 Million

Tirranna, one of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s largest residential properties and final designs constructed in 1955, has sold. Tirranna was listed by Albert Safdie and Marsha Charles of Coldwell Banker Realty in New Canaan, who closed on the property for $6 million on Jan. 22. The property, marketed through the Coldwell Banker Global Luxury program, was featured in Architectural Digest and other media outlets.Tirranna is among the higher-priced Frank Lloyd Wright properties on record as well as one of the most expensive properties sold in New Canaan in the last year.“It was a rare honor to represent Tirranna, a true gem of mid-century architectural history that will continue to provide a Zen-like experience blending nature and comfort to its latest inhabitants,” Safdie and Charles said in a statement.Wright worked on Tirranna during the time he was designing New York City’s Guggenheim Museum. Situated on 14 acres of protected land in New Canaan, Tirranna blends geometric complexity with nature’s flowing curves. The seven-bedroom, 8.5-bath, 7,000 sq. ft. home boasts Philippine Mahogany, concrete block walls and soaring ceilings. The landscape was thoughtfully designed by Frank Okamura, the landscape architect known for restoring the Japanese gardens at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in the late 1940s. The south-facing greenhouse was built using some of the scalloped glass windows from the Guggenheim Museum project. Additional highlights of the property include a guest studio, large barn, tennis court, a wine cellar that was converted from a former bomb shelter, a playhouse, and a rooftop observatory with telescope. The positioning of the house is reminiscent of Wright’s iconic Falling Water. The post Frank Lloyd Wright Estate “Tirranna” in New Canaan, Connecticut Sells for $6 Million appeared first on Coldwell Banker Global Luxury Blog - Luxury Home & Style.
